Character Name: Wanda Maximoff
Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Canon Point: Post-WandaVision
Background: HERE

Suitability: Throughout her entire life, Wanda has been molded by the vitriol that has led to the loss of her family and loved ones. She was born in war-ridden Sokovia, where her parents tried to give her and her twin brother a happy, peaceful life. Despite that, that idyllic life was ripped from her at the age of 10, her home bombed and her parents killed in the explosion. Orphaned and terrified, the reality of war and death became the foundations for her choices thereafter.

This is to say that Wanda understands the purpose of war, having lived in the midst of it for many of her formative years. She does think unkindly of those who perpetuate it, but a part of her gets that the only way to deal with violence is with violence. Though at times misguided by this perspective, she does want to do good—as witnessed by her joining the Avengers. She wants to protect those who can't fight, especially now that she has the magical prowess to do so, and though someone who prefers to be on her own (after all those she's lost), she knows working together with others can be beneficial.

Speaking of magical prowess, it has taken Wanda a long time of cohabiting with her powers to being the one in control of them. She is guilty of using her powers to (unintentionally) hurt others in the past, thus being feared, so existing in a world where magic is normal—exalted, even—will be freeing. She will want to continue learning about her Chaos Magic and developing it, thus likely bringing her to researching this world's magic and the old gods. The prospect of hopping between worlds and being able to summon others through magic will be of great interest to her.

Powers:

Wanda’s powers can be separated into two categories: psionic abilities granted by the Mind Stone, and her innate magical abilities which were unlocked and amplified after being exposed to the Stone.

PSIONICS Although her psionic abilities exist along the tier of telepathic abilities, these powers are magical in nature given that she received them through the cosmic energies of the Mind Stone. Whenever she engages in her psionic powers, they manifest in a red mist that covers her hands and body. Engaging in this kind of magic requires her to focus and use the movement of her hands to direct the psionic energy. The following abilities fall under her telepathic powers.
  • PSIONIC ENERGY MANIPULATION Wanda is able to use her magic in blasts and waves, being able to bend at will whatever target she aims at. This energy manifests itself in a red color around her hands, and she can thus manipulate the energy it creates. TELEKINESIS falls as a standard under this category. She can use telekinesis to move objects and even individuals, being able to use her psionic energy manipulation to affect and control molecules and particles. She has used these powers for feats as simple as moving wooden blocks while suspending them in the air, to stopping a train from its high-speed derailment. The stronger she’s gotten, the more capable she is in using her powers to lift and move heavier objects, including people, and has shown to be capable of using this branch of powers to telekinetically repair objects at a molecular level. Basically, if the object has mass and a structure, Wanda can most likely manipulate it. In the same way that she can repair and bind objects together through her telekinesis and psionic energy manipulation, Wanda can also use her energy to completely DISINTEGRATE objects.

  • FORCEFIELD GENERATION Wanda can make a barrier of red energy around herself to protect herself and others, and deflect attacks. Not only has she used this as a defense mechanism, but she has also used it as a barrier to protect herself when falling from great heights and land safely should she crash land. This is generally very useful, as she isn’t a close-contact combatant, and gives her a defensive edge over those who are.

  • FLIGHT Wanda can modulate the energy around her hands to create a sort of blast to help propel herself up in the air. She does not fly by willing herself to do so, but by manipulating the gravity around herself. She can levitate several feet up in the air and travel by this means.

  • MENTAL MANIPULATION Through her psionic abilities, Wanda can also apply a fair deal of TELEPATHIC abilities; she can read minds, communicate telepathically, and experience the thoughts and memories of others. This is something she needs to actively do in order to trigger, considering she has to focus the blast of her powers towards her target. With this also comes the ability of mentally and emotionally manipulating others, using a type of illusory hypnosis and leaving those under her ‘spell’ in a sort of trance. She can manipulate memory, thoughts, actions, emotions and the senses of others at will; she would also use this to EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATE others by eliciting fear and emotional pain. However, this is an ability that she tries to not use as often anymore, even if she’s inadvertently used it in more recent events.

  • MASTER SORCERESS Wanda was born with latent magical abilities that were unlocked and amplified after being exposed to the Mind Stone. She was completely unaware of her magical origins, and was ignorant to the supposed prophecy about her being the Scarlet Witch—a witch without a coven, who is not taught magic, but is forged instead. Though the prophecy claims her powers exceed those of the Sorcerer Supreme, Wanda has not had any formal training and it’s not clear how refined her magic is or isn’t. Basically, it’s a WIP. Below are a list of the abilities that encompass her innate magical abilities.
  • CHAOS MAGIC MANIPULATION Chaos Magic is the name of Wanda’s magical abilities, and according to legend, only the Scarlet Witch can use this magic. The Scarlet Witch is a being capable of spontaneous creation, meaning that she can use her magic for different effects without needing incantations. This type of magic takes on the same red color as Wanda’s psionic abilities. It is raw magic power that stems more from emotion than any specific logic, and it has proven to be used even subconsciously in order to protect Wanda from pain. Being the magic used by a being capable of spontaneous creation means that not only can she theoretically CREATE LIFE (like her twin sons, or breathing life into plastic butterflies and a stork painting), Wanda can also MANIPULATE REALITY. She can create small zones where reality follows her wishes and her rules, easing anyone who enters it into whatever the reality is. This works fascinatingly well with her mental manipulation powers, as the individuals stuck in this manipulated reality would be, in fact, magically ‘hypnotized’. She doesn’t just manipulate individuals, though; Wanda can manipulate objects around her, through TRANSMUTATION, thus changing their shape and molecular structure.

Additionally, with Chaos Magic, Wanda can perform CONJURATIONS to create things from nothing—from wedding rings to dog collars, and even an entire house within her area (or Hex). Within the Hex, Wanda can manipulate THE PASSAGE OF TIME and the WEATHER. Additionally, she can control ELEMENTS too, such as electricity, fire, and water.

This has yet to be confirmed as to whether it only occurs within the Hex, but Wanda can also BESTOW POWERS upon others, either directly or indirectly. When she birthed her sons, she gave them super-speed and psionics powers, and through direct contact with her magic, was able to give powers to Monica Rambeau. Most impressively, she replicated the power of the Mind Stone in a now-dead Vision to give him life and all the powers he had when living. She can even MANIPULATE ILLUSIONS in real time in order to trick others to see what she wants them to see—not within their minds—but in the outside world.

  • TELEPORTATION Wanda can also teleport herself from one place to another with the twirl of a hand, and uses this enhanced ability to move from one spot to another quickly enough, likely with the help of manipulating time itself.

  • PROTECTION SPELL This is via the use of magic runes on walls (or contained space). This allows the sole witch who cast the runes to be the only one to be able to use magic in that given space.

  • ENERGY ABSORPTION She can absorb the magic of others and transform it into her own Chaos Magic, amplifying her powers to an extent. Wanda can do this without killing her target, just weakening them.

  • ASTRAL PROJECTION Wanda is capable of projecting her astral form without losing consciousness of her physical self. So, whilst her physical body is going about mundane, every day things, her astral body can be doing something else.

  • PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Wanda's life is a myriad of circumstances that have strongly impacted her, from one turning point to another, between defeats and losses, but the one I will focus on is the events during Captain America: Civil War when she was in the Avengers compound. It is when she was faced with two different perspectives between Vision and Hawkeye.

She had recently lost Pietro, her twin brother and, although she was in the company of others, she heavily resented her powers and the way she wasn't able to fully control them. It was because of her that the Sokovia Accords—an international agreement to keep people with super powers in check—were even created, as her country saw the devastation that she was, in part, responsible for, causing the country to disappear altogether from the map, geographically and politically.

While they were alone, she had confided in Vision that she did not know who or what she was becoming, and although she thinks she is herself, others don't see it that way. It made her afraid, hesitant, incredibly cautious. Vision had sympathized and told her that though he does not understand the Mind Stone that gives him life, in aiming to understand it, he would not let fear control him. When Hawkeye came to recruit her despite Vision's protests, she chose his words as a basis for her choice to go against the Sokovia Accords—to control her own fear, for she cannot control anyone else's.

Despite this, she never really took the time to understand them, as advised, and though she grew stronger and more confident in them, her powers easily overwhelmed her, as their basis comes from her emotions.

Vision's words echo more in her actions after she unlocks her powers as the Scarlet Witch years later; she leaves Westview after telling Monica that "I don't understand this power, but I will", meaning that she is no longer afraid of what her powers are and what she is to become because of them. She is shown later studying from the Darkhold, a magical book, to understand the prophecy about her—the Scarlet Witch—in an attempt to learn about her powers and not allow them to control her anymore.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

Wanda often teeters on the line of an antagonist and protagonist throughout the franchise; even when she is one of 'the good guys', many contend that she is not, in fact, a moral person because of her choices.

What needs to be understood about Wanda is that her foundations were shaken from a very young age, her life flipped upside down and no sign of landing on firm ground apparent as the years went by. There is no home for her, and she constantly loses those whom she loves. But it is because of her core memories being of her family that she puts a lot of weight on familial relationships. Wanda often finds herself looking at others as an extension of the family she no longer has, and she loves earnestly, at times in ways that make her incredibly vulnerable.

It is also because of the villain-esque views others have of her that Wanda works incredibly hard to always do what she thinks is right, even when she is misguided, and she is incredibly hesitant to trust and give too much away. At the end of the day, she has this skewed idea that it's the world against her, but—despite this—she tries to be like those whom she sees as better than her—like Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton.

Wanda's moral compass is, thus, quite abstract. She respects those who show respect towards her, and although she could be cruel with her powers, she enlists self-restraint due to the love she holds for those who left a positive mark in her life—those who know she is better than what the naysayers believe.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

Wanda admires people who are honest and selfless. This is in part because she wishes she could be perceived this way, although her acts of honesty come off as wrong, and her selfless acts are misconstrued as selfish. She wants to be like those individuals who are perceived as good, mirroring her own flaws.

Additionally, she admires those who are understanding. Wanda understands that she is not the only one who has suffered heavy losses in life, but to have her grief-based actions misunderstood and criticized only makes her feel worse. Those who can set aside their biases and understand a person despite their flaws and mistakes are people she wishes to surround herself with, even if it's just one individual of billions in the whole world.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

For many years after receiving her powers, Wanda disliked what they were—disliked what they made her out to be. This mostly stemmed from not knowing enough about them, but it speaks a lot about how she hates something that is so intrinsically linked to who she is. She has now taken the steps into learning about her powers, learning to like them, and thus herself.

Additionally, with all those whom she's lost, there's a case to be made about Wanda's survivor's guilt. After gaining her powers, her actions (directly or indirectly) brought forth the chaos that ended in the death of her loved ones. If only she had been better at controlling her magic, stronger, or braver—or said something different, perhaps she wouldn't have lost everyone. Grief is a part of her, however, even if it makes her cold and cruel, at times, even when she wishes she could be the opposite of that.

What is their sign, and why?

    The Hanged Man.

Wanda has always considered herself to be an outsider, because of her experiences and because of who she is. At least growing up she had Pietro, but after having lost him, she—in a way—lost her other half. Many have tried to climb the walls she put around herself, but she always remained resilient to change and was unwilling to become the showpiece superhero she was expected to be. Even among her Avengers friends, Wanda always felt like the odd one out. She knows she is different from the other superheroes, and that it makes her dangerous; she accepts that others fear her and that she cannot change this—is unwilling to change it.

This sign also fits Wanda exceptionally well as her current canon point shows her choosing exile and living on her own.
